Today we offer you to make a cutting board, a wooden tray from a wine case and to use a wooden log as a trivet. You don't need to be an experienced handyman to follow these tutorials, all you need is the right tools.
Wooden cutting board :
Convenient for cutting your food, it can also be used as a deli and cheese board for your aperitifs.
Material:
- A beautiful plank or a scrap of wood
When choosing wood, choose cedar, cherry, maple or walnut.
- A sander
- 80 grit and 120 grit sandpaper
- Food grade mineral oil
How to proceed?
- Have the board cut to size at a carpenter's shop or DIY store.
As an example, you will need about 45 x 35 x 1 cm for a large board, 38 x 25 x 1 cm for a medium and 25 x 15 x 1 cm for a small one.
- Sand the board on both sides, on the edges and in the corners with 80 grit and then 120 grit sandpaper.
- Wipe off the sawdust with a damp cloth.
- Soak a rag with oil and apply it to the entire surface of the board, rubbing well.
- Reapply until the wood stops absorbing the oil and allow to dry overnight.
Advice on the use of wooden boards :
To ensure that your wooden board will last you a long time, make sure you follow a few simple tips that will make a difference:
- Remember to oil the wood once a month to prevent it from drying out.
- Be careful not to soak your wooden board in water as this may cause it to crack and splinter. Also avoid putting it in the dishwasher. Wood is a living material that does not tolerate temperature changes well.
- Please wipe the board dry before storing it and store it so that it is upright.
Wooden tray from a wine case :
Material:
- A case of wine
- Screws
- Nails.
- Two handles or drawer knobs
- 4 cleats
How to proceed?
- Dismantle the wine case to keep only the desired side.
- To make the sides of the tray, align the cleats to the edge of the tray and cut them to the correct size.
- Assemble the sides, make pre-drilled holes to prevent the wood from splitting and then nail each cleat.
- Screw the handles on each side.
Tip: Depending on your preferences, you can paint, varnish or sand the board to give it an aged look.
Wooden trivet :
For a nice trivet in a rustic and authentic style, you can take a wooden log that you can decorate or leave untreated.
Material:
- A wooden log (available in DIY stores)
- Fine abrasive paper from 140 to 180 grains
- Acrylic Paints
- Brushes
- After drying varnish for acrylic paint (matt, satin or gloss)
How to proceed?
- Sand to remove straightened fibres and dust the log with a cloth.
- Draw your design with a pencil or stencil.
- Paint the background white with acrylic paint, which you will have diluted slightly with water to make it fine enough. The surface will be clean and ready to receive the first coat of paint and your colours will look brighter.
- Paint your design with acrylic paint (don't hesitate to dilute it if it seems too thick) and let it dry.
- Apply a coat of varnish after drying for acrylic paint.
